Be The GM For a Day

Since the last couple posts have inspired some insightful and passionate replies, I am now challenging my readers to put their money where their fingers are. Be the GM for a day. Ok, this isn't actually a bona fide contest that the Bucs are running,...like usual, they haven't recalled my calls.
This will be our little thing. Submit your comments with what you would do to turn this ship around. Be honest, yet realistic. "Get A-Rod", probably isn't doable. (actually, I'm not sure, the Yankees don't return my calls either.)
But anyway, give it a shot. Maybe I'll bundle them up and send them off to David Littlebudget. I'm certain that he hasn't heard enough suggestions over the last six seasons.
Finally, kudos to the reader that suggested the return of the great David Lapoint, - now that is Bucco Knowledge 101. Although Snax is not available, we do have calls into Stosh Belinda and Enrique Romo. Again, no calls have been returned.

Dave LaPoint is not looking to return to Bucs any time soon.

CHANGES: 1. Trade LaRoche,Torres, and Wilson to anyone for anything. 2. Demote Duke and Maholm.
3. Offer Brad Eldred to Walmart in exchange for a qualified cashier or stockboy.
4. Explain to Jim Tracy that there is no silver lining in losing a game by 9 runs.

Your Sunday article said it best, this is a meatless team. Our only real 'stars' are Sanchez and Bay, and they are both grossly overrated. Bay has struck out in so many key situations this year. The 3-4-5 in an order needs to combine for 90+ homers a year these days. I believe the Bucs 3-4-5 slots have something like 24. It's just not enough. I think Nady is the only guy who actually wants to drive in runs.

bring back Pops Stargell, Spanky Lavalliere (sp?), and El Sid. don't forget Chico Lind, the Candy Man, the Cobra, Scrap Iron, Maddog, Sangy, Slik, and the Rubber Band Man. hell we could win in nicknames alone.

It is not a simple fix. What they really need to do is to invest in the development of players. For any team to have this many loosing seasons means they can not draft and develop talent. If this is my team, I would start by looking at the coaches and the scouts. I would look to double my investment in that area, and find someone to run it who knows wtf they are doing...look to pilfer talent from the A's.

If you draft that high for that many years, you need to be able to show something for it. Pitching has been especially bad. Steal someone from the Braves system to develop talent. Over pay a little in the infrastructure and you might have a chance to start improving. Then once you get some pieces to build around you can think about adding some vets. Right now, there is too little to build around.

Some one needs Whacked!

Tony is right. The Pirates need to take pointers from their cousins down the street. The Steelers and Bucs have very little in common other than the same colors and shared parking. The Rooney family has built an empire by putting infrastructure first - coaching, player development, etc. You can't believe that the Steelers aren't under the same budgetary constraints. By the way, how do the Bucs get stung with so many major arm injuries to their prospects? Is this another area of concern - sports medicine?

The Pens did it through the draft too...

9 teams in 12 years, last game in 1991....probably could not do any worse with Lapoint, but I think the Phillies are already looking at him to add to their steller Bullpen.

The last Phillies cast off reliever was the best closer we have had in a while...

How about some love for Ronny Francis? Pretty cool that he joins the hall on the first attempt...well deserved. Probably the best face off guy for the guins ever...
